Roma Grind It Out as Scudetto Dream Stays Alive
Another narrow win, another step closer
Scudetto-chasing AS Roma maintained their flawless record when scoring first this season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Como, keeping themselves just three points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan. It was far from a classic in the capital, but once again Roma showed they know how to win ugly when it matters most.
On a cold, dreary night at the Stadio Olimpico, the hosts struggled to impose themselves early on. The opening 25 minutes passed with little rhythm or attacking threat, as Como sat deep and frustrated Roma’s attempts to break through a compact defensive block.
Frustration before the breakthrough
Roma gradually began to increase the pressure but chances remained scarce. Wesley Franca blazed over from inside the area, opting for power rather than precision with a wall of defenders between him and the goal. It summed up a first half that lacked creativity and tempo.
The best opportunity before the interval arrived late in the half when Wesley burst in behind the defence and squared for Evan Ferguson. The Irish striker, however, could only direct his effort straight at Como goalkeeper Jean Butez, ensuring the sides went into the break level.
A moment of fortune changes everything
Both teams emerged with greater urgency after halftime. Como tested Roma more frequently, matching their entire first-half shot count within the opening 10 minutes of the second period. At the other end, Bryan Cristante thought he had broken the deadlock, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside.
The decisive moment finally arrived in fortuitous fashion. An injury to Jayden Addai created space down the flank for Devyne Rensch to deliver a cross from the byline. With a touch of assistance from Matias Soule, the ball fell perfectly for Wesley, who drove a low shot into the bottom corner to spark relief around the stadium.
Control without comfort
Despite holding only a slender lead, Roma rarely looked in danger of surrendering it. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side managed the game intelligently, limiting Como to half-chances while protecting their advantage with discipline and composure.
The visitors once again showed promise, but this defeat underlined the gap that still exists between Como and the true title contenders. For Roma, however, it was another reminder of their growing resilience and belief as they continue to chase their first Scudetto in 24 years.
