Nigeria Send a Serious AFCON Warning With Mozambique Rout

Super Eagles strike early and take control

Nigeria delivered a ruthless performance to crush Mozambique 4-0 and book their place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals. Playing in heavy rain in Fes, the Super Eagles were dominant from the first whistle and never allowed their opponents into the game.

Ademola Lookman opened the scoring after 20 minutes, finishing confidently from Akor Adams’ cross. The early goal settled Nigeria and set the tone for a one-sided contest.

Victor Osimhen doubled the lead just five minutes later, reacting quickest at the back post to stab home and put Eric Chelle’s side firmly in control.

Osimhen and Adams turn dominance into goals

Nigeria came out even stronger after the break and effectively ended the match within two minutes of the restart. Lookman again caused problems down the left, and when his cross evaded the goalkeeper, Osimhen was on hand to tap into an empty net.

It was Osimhen’s second of the night and another reminder of his importance to this Nigeria side. The Super Eagles continued to attack with confidence, pressing high and moving the ball quickly through midfield.

Akor Adams finally got his reward late on, smashing a powerful right-footed strike into the corner to make it 4-0. It was a deserved goal for a forward who had worked tirelessly throughout the match.

Nigeria showing real title credentials

This result takes Nigeria into the last eight, where they will face either Algeria or DR Congo in Marrakesh. More importantly, it underlined their status as serious contenders for the title.

Nigeria have now scored 12 goals in this AFCON, equalling their highest tally in a single tournament. Their attacking balance, creativity and depth were again on full display, with squad rotation failing to disrupt their rhythm.

Even a brief on-field disagreement between Osimhen and Lookman could not spoil a near-perfect night. Mozambique offered little resistance, and Nigeria’s defensive shape remained solid throughout.

With confidence growing and goals flowing freely, the Super Eagles are peaking at exactly the right time.
