Newcastle boost survival push as Ramsey strike deepens Tottenham crisis

Magpies secure crucial Premier League win as Spurs sink further into trouble

Newcastle United claimed a huge 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur thanks to Jacob Ramsey’s decisive second-half strike, piling pressure on Spurs boss Thomas Frank and intensifying fears of a relegation battle in north London.

Tottenham’s miserable domestic form continued, with the defeat marking their fifth loss in nine matches and extending their alarming run to just two wins in their last 17 league games.

Newcastle dominate tense first half and take deserved lead

Both sides entered the match under pressure due to poor recent form, and Tottenham’s growing injury crisis – with 11 players unavailable – added to the tension at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Newcastle looked the more dangerous side early on, with two corners flashing narrowly over the crossbar and Jacob Ramsey coming close with a powerful effort that drifted inches wide. Spurs struggled to find rhythm, with Xavi Simons dragging an early chance wide as nerves spread among the home supporters.

The situation worsened for Tottenham midway through the first half when Wilson Odobert suffered a potentially serious knee injury, forcing another unwanted change. Newcastle continued to push forward and thought they had taken the lead just before half-time when Joe Willock curled home, but VAR ruled the goal out for a marginal offside.

The visitors eventually found their breakthrough in stoppage time. After a corner was partially cleared, Willock delivered a dangerous cross to the back post where Malick Thiaw reacted quickest, heading against Guglielmo Vicario before firing in the rebound to give Newcastle a deserved lead.

The goal triggered loud boos from Spurs fans, with sections of the crowd chanting for former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham respond briefly before Ramsey delivers winner

Tottenham showed improved energy after the break and began to create chances. Mathys Tel and Pape Sarr both tested Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope before Spurs finally equalised in the 64th minute.

A corner from Simons caused chaos inside the penalty area, with Sarr heading the ball back across goal for Archie Gray to nod home, sparking brief celebrations among the home crowd.

However, Tottenham’s momentum disappeared almost immediately. A misplaced pass from Conor Gallagher ended a promising attack, allowing Anthony Gordon to drive forward and set up Ramsey, who calmly swept the ball home just four minutes after Spurs had equalised.

Pressure mounts on Frank as Spurs crisis deepens

Tottenham pushed forward in search of another equaliser, with Randal Kolo Muani introduced from the bench, but clear chances were limited. Micky van de Ven fired over late on in Spurs’ final opportunity to rescue a point.

Frustration among supporters reached boiling point, with chants calling for Frank’s dismissal echoing around the stadium before full-time. With a huge derby clash against Arsenal approaching, Tottenham’s leadership faces a major decision regarding the club’s direction.

For Newcastle, the victory ended a three-match losing run and provided a significant boost in their fight to climb away from danger.
