Manchester City Face Play-Off Pressure Against Galatasaray
City must win at the Etihad to avoid another Champions League play-off scare
Manchester City risk being pushed into the Champions League knockout play-off round for the second season in a row unless they beat Galatasaray, who are battling to finish inside the top 24.
Form & team news
The task for Pep Guardiola’s side is simple — win and hope results elsewhere go their way, with City needing to leapfrog at least three teams currently above them in the table.
City arrive off the back of a 2-0 Premier League win over Wolves, but their European form has raised serious concerns. A shocking 3-1 Champions League defeat to Bodø/Glimt last week exposed recent vulnerabilities, following a 2-0 home loss to Bayer Leverkusen in their previous Etihad outing.
Despite that, history is on City’s side. They have never lost back-to-back home matches in the Champions League group or league phase and have gone eight home games unbeaten since that Leverkusen defeat (six wins, two draws). That run suggests City are well placed to respond under pressure.
For Galatasaray, the most realistic outcome is securing a seeded spot in the play-off round. Anything other than a win is likely to leave them finishing between 17th and 24th, resulting in an unseeded position.
The Turkish champions are winless in their last three Champions League matches (one draw, two defeats), although they did regain momentum domestically with a 3-1 Süper Lig win over Karagümrük on Saturday. Replicating that away in Europe will be difficult for a side that has won just one of its last 12 European away matches (three draws, eight losses).

Head-to-head
This will be the first-ever competitive meeting between Manchester City and Galatasaray.
The last English team to beat Galatasaray in the Champions League was Arsenal in December 2014. Since then, the Turkish side are unbeaten against English opposition in the competition (two wins, one draw), including a 1-0 home victory over Liverpool.
