Lille vs PSG: Can the Champions Be Stopped?

Saturday night in Ligue 1 delivers a clash with plenty of intrigue: Lille, struggling to find their scoring touch, welcome champions PSG, who are building momentum despite injuries and setbacks.

Lille’s Scoring Drought

For weeks, Lille looked like one of the most dangerous attacking teams in France. Thirteen goals in their opening four league games told the story of a team brimming with confidence. But suddenly, the goals dried up. Two straight league matches without finding the net — their longest drought since 2023 — has raised concerns.

The last time Lille went three Ligue 1 games without scoring dates all the way back to 2017. Lose again this weekend, and they risk sliding into their first three-match losing streak in the French top flight since the pandemic-hit 2019/20 season.

At home, things have been just as puzzling. Only three of their 13 league goals this season came at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. The flip side? When Lille score twice or more at home, they usually win — and they’ve done that nine times in a row.

PSG Finding Their Groove

PSG may have slipped up against Marseille earlier this month, but Luis Enrique’s men bounced back immediately. A thrilling Champions League win over Barcelona followed, and domestically they’ve continued to grind out results.

Still, questions remain. PSG could suffer back-to-back away defeats in Ligue 1 for the first time since January 2023 if they falter here. Despite that, their defence has looked solid — four clean sheets in six league outings, a stat only Lyon can better across Europe’s top leagues.

Scoring hasn’t been a major problem, but fans will remember that PSG haven’t failed to net in consecutive away league matches since March 2022. History is on their side, though: they’ve beaten Lille in their last three meetings and picked up points in six of the last seven trips to the north.

Team News

Lille are still managing injury problems. Alexsandro missed the Lyon match with a muscle issue, Ousmane Toure is out long-term with a cruciate ligament injury, and goalkeeper Marc-Aurele Caillard remains sidelined. Thursday brought some relief though, with Hakon Arnar Haraldsson’s early strike sealing a 1-0 Europa League win over Roma.

PSG’s injury list is just as concerning. Ousmane Dembele, Joao Neves, and Desire Doue are all doubtful, while Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are also sidelined. Still, Illia Zabarnyi and Lucas Beraldo stepped up with goals in their last league outing, while ex-Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier collected his fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

PSG: Chevalier; Hakimi, Zabarnyi, Beraldo, Hernandez; Kang-in, Vitinha, Mayulu; Mbaye, Ramos, Barcola

Prediction

Both teams arrive with question marks, but PSG’s depth and defensive stability give them the edge. Lille must rediscover their attacking spark quickly, or the champions will punish them.
