Late Blow: Antony Denies Forest’s European Dream

Nottingham Forest were minutes away from celebrating a historic European victory, but Real Betis spoiled the party. Igor Jesus’s two first-half goals had Ange Postecoglou’s side dreaming, only for Antony to strike in the 85th minute and break Forest hearts.

A Night of Highs and Heartbreak

This was Forest’s first competitive European match since 1996, and more than 5,000 fans made the trip to Seville. Their noise filled the stadium, and when Igor Jesus scored his first goal, the away end erupted. It was a beautifully worked team move, showing exactly the type of football Postecoglou is trying to build. Minutes later, Jesus doubled the lead with a strong header from Douglas Luiz’s corner. A hat-trick almost followed, as he smacked the post, but Betis were hanging on.

Betis Hit Back

Real Betis had started quickly, with Cédric Bakambu firing in the opener after just 15 minutes. But Forest’s response was immediate and electric, turning the game on its head. For most of the match, Forest looked in control. They had 13 shots in the first half alone, compared to Betis’s single effort. The travelling supporters sang about being back in Europe, proud to see their team not only competing but outplaying strong opponents.

The Cruel Twist

But football has a way of punishing missed chances. As the game edged towards the closing stages, Betis pushed harder. Pablo Fornals went close, and Natan wasted a big opportunity. Finally, Antony, once a figure of criticism in England, struck low into the corner to level the score. Forest players dropped to the turf, stunned. A first win under Postecoglou will have to wait. But while the draw hurt, the overriding emotion among the fans was pride.

Postecoglou’s Verdict

“I thought some of our football was outstanding tonight,” said the Forest boss. “The challenge now is to turn that into wins. We just need that bit of luck – even if one goes in off someone’s back, I’ll take it.” Forest’s wait for a European win continues, but after 29 years away from the big stage, they’ve announced their return in style.
