Manchester United continue resurgence with dominant win over Tottenham

Carrick’s United extend winning run with convincing Old Trafford performance

Manchester United’s revival under Michael Carrick gathered further momentum as goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes secured a deserved 2-0 victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

United have enjoyed an impressive resurgence since Carrick’s appointment, with victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham already boosting confidence around the club. Saturday’s win added another major result and strengthened United’s hold on fourth place in the Premier League.

The breakthrough arrived shortly after Tottenham captain Cristian Romero was sent off for a reckless first-half challenge on Casemiro. United capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Mbeumo opening the scoring before Fernandes sealed the result late in the second half.

The victory marked United’s first league win against Tottenham since 2022 and continues their impressive push toward securing a Champions League place.

Romero red card proves turning point in intense first half

Tottenham began the match with strong backing from their travelling supporters, who were vocal throughout the opening stages. United started brightly, with Mbeumo firing narrowly over and Casemiro forcing a long-range save from Guglielmo Vicario.

United nearly took the lead midway through the half when Matheus Cunha curled a first-time effort just wide, while Fernandes also went close with a snapshot attempt.

However, the match shifted dramatically in the 29th minute when Romero caught Casemiro high on the ankle. Referee Michael Oliver immediately showed the Spurs captain a straight red card, leaving the visitors facing a difficult task for the remainder of the match.

United quickly took advantage of their extra man. Kobbie Mainoo met Fernandes’ corner with a clever flick that allowed Mbeumo to sweep the ball into the net through a crowded penalty area.

Vicario prevented further damage before halftime with an excellent reflex save to deny Casemiro from close range.

United control second half despite Tottenham resistance

United continued to dominate after the restart, although they had a goal disallowed when Amad Diallo was ruled offside from close range.

Tottenham attempted to respond through lively attacking moments, with Xavi Simons narrowly missing the target. Their situation worsened further when Destiny Udogie was forced off injured, adding to Spurs’ growing list of unavailable players.

United increased their pressure as the half progressed. Vicario produced several impressive saves to deny Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, while penalty appeals from the home side were waved away.

Matheus Cunha also saw a goal ruled out for offside, and Diallo was again denied by Vicario, who remained Tottenham’s standout performer.

Fernandes seals victory as United show attacking depth

United eventually secured the victory in the 81st minute. Dalot delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Fernandes guided the ball into the net in front of the Stretford End.

United continued to push forward late in the match, with Mbeumo and substitute Benjamin Sesko both testing Tottenham’s defence. Tyler Fletcher was also introduced during stoppage time to make his senior debut.

The win strengthens United’s position in the race for Champions League qualification, while Tottenham’s difficult run continues as they search for their first league victory in seven matches.
