Bayern Stunned by Augsburg as Bundesliga Leaders Fall at Home

Shock defeat in Bavaria

The best team in Germany were reminded that local rivalries ignore league positions as Bayern Munich suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season, losing 2–1 at home to Augsburg. Michael Olise struck the crossbar with the final kick of the match, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the league leaders.

It was Bayern’s first league loss since March last year and a huge moment for Augsburg, who arrived in Munich just three points above the relegation zone and without a win since early December.

Bayern lead but fail to kill the game

Bayern looked on course for another routine home victory when Hiroki Ito opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, rising to head home from an Olise corner. The hosts created further chances to extend their advantage but were wasteful in front of goal.

Augsburg, meanwhile, showed they were not overawed by the occasion. Robin Fellhauer struck the crossbar before the break, offering a warning that Bayern had not done enough to put the game to bed.

Augsburg fight back and seal famous win

The visitors increased the pressure after the interval and were rewarded in the 75th minute. Arthur Chaves glanced a header into the net from a corner, with Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig unable to get there in time.

Just six minutes later, the shock was complete. Dimitrios Giannoulis surged down the left and delivered a precise cross, allowing Han-Noah Massengo to finish and put Augsburg ahead.

Bayern pushed desperately for an equaliser, but despite Olise rattling the crossbar at the death, Augsburg held firm to claim a famous victory in Bavaria.
