Caicedo saves Chelsea late to secure vital Champions League win
Chelsea edge closer to automatic qualification
Chelsea will head into the final Champions League matchday inside the automatic qualification places after a tense 1–0 victory over Pafos at Stamford Bridge. Moisés Caicedo’s late header proved decisive on a night when patience was tested and nerves were frayed among the home support.
For long periods, it looked as though Liam Rosenior’s first European match as Chelsea head coach could end in frustration. Pafos, competing in Europe for the first time, defended with discipline and organisation, frustrating a Chelsea side that struggled badly for rhythm and urgency in a flat first half.
Slow start and rising anxiety
Chelsea dominated possession from the outset but did little with it. A first half filled with sideways passing drained energy from the stands and allowed the visitors to grow in confidence. The first real attempt did not arrive until the 15th minute when Reece James curled narrowly wide from distance.
Enzo Fernández thought he had broken the deadlock by heading in Pedro Neto’s cross, only for the goal to be disallowed for what appeared a harsh push. Pafos almost stunned Stamford Bridge when Jaja’s deflected effort wrong-footed Filip Jorgensen and struck the post from the visitors’ only meaningful attack of the half.

Second-half improvement but no breakthrough
Chelsea improved after the break, pushing higher and moving the ball quicker, but penetration remained an issue. Benoît Badiashile glanced a header wide, Caicedo fired a long-range effort that was beaten away by goalkeeper Jay Gorter, and crosses continued to be dealt with comfortably.
The introduction of Estêvão lifted the crowd and injected urgency. The Brazilian forced a sharp save with a volley and was then released by an inventive Badiashile back-heel, only to drag his effort wide. Momentum was building, but the breakthrough still refused to arrive.
Caicedo delivers the decisive moment
As the clock ticked down and the prospect of a must-win trip to Napoli loomed, Chelsea finally found relief. From a corner, Wesley Fofana flicked the ball on and Caicedo reacted quickest, powering a header home in the 76th minute to spark celebrations around west London.
The goal was enough to secure a narrow but crucial win, keeping Chelsea firmly in control of their Champions League destiny ahead of the final group game.
