PSG Shocked in Lisbon as Sporting Punish Wasteful Champions
Dominant PSG Pay the Price in Champions League Defeat
Paris Saint-Germain suffered a costly Champions League defeat in Lisbon, falling to Sporting despite controlling large spells of the match.
Luis Enrique’s side dominated possession, territory and chances, but a ruthless double from Sporting striker Luis Suárez exposed PSG’s failure to turn control into goals. The loss puts PSG’s top-eight place in the league phase under serious threat.
PSG Control the Game but Find No Reward
PSG started strongly, pressing high and pinning Sporting deep with long spells of possession. Luis Enrique handed youngster Senny Mayulu a start in midfield, and for the first time since QSI’s takeover, six French players were named in PSG’s Champions League XI.
Early pressure looked to pay off when Warren Zaïre-Emery headed home from a Fabian Ruiz cross, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review judged Mayulu to have fouled Geny Catamo in the buildup.
Nuno Mendes also found the net soon after, only for his effort to be disallowed for a foul by Ousmane Dembélé on goalkeeper Rui Silva. PSG kept pushing, but frustration grew as chances went begging.

Sporting Strike Against the Run of Play
After further disallowed goals and missed opportunities — including an offside header from the Ballon d’Or winner — PSG were punished.
From one of Sporting’s rare attacks, PSG failed to clear a corner. Catamo’s volley deflected perfectly into the path of Luis Suárez, who calmly slotted past Lucas Chevalier to spark wild celebrations at the José Alvalade Stadium.
PSG responded quickly. Just five minutes later, substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia silenced the crowd with a stunning right-footed strike into the top corner to level the match.
Late Drama as Suarez Strikes Again
With the game heading toward a draw, Sporting found one final moment. In stoppage time, Francisco Trincão fired from the edge of the box. Chevalier got a hand to the shot but could only push it into danger — where Suárez reacted first to head home the winner.
PSG fell to their second Champions League defeat of the campaign after previously losing to Bayern Munich. They now sit fifth in the standings, with Newcastle United visiting Paris next week in a crucial fixture.
