Manchester City Suffer Shock Champions League Defeat in Norway

Bodø/Glimt Stun City With Historic Home Win

Manchester City suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in their Champions League history as they lost 3-1 away to Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt on Tuesday night.

The match was played in Bodø, a town of around 55,000 people located north of the Arctic Circle, and ended with the tournament debutants recording their first-ever win in the competition.

Kasper Høgh put the hosts in control with two close-range goals in the 22nd and 24th minutes, capitalising on defensive errors to give Bodø a stunning early advantage.

Rodri Red Card Caps Miserable Night

Jens Hauge sent the home crowd inside the 8,000-capacity Aspmyra Stadium into raptures in the 58th minute, curling a superb shot into the top corner to make it 3-0.

City responded quickly through Rayan Cherki, whose low shot found the net in the 60th minute, but any hopes of a comeback were effectively ended two minutes later.

Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession, leaving City with ten men for the final half-hour.

City Outplayed Despite Possession

Despite controlling large spells of possession, City struggled to create clear chances and failed to seriously test Bodø goalkeeper Nikita Haikin from a series of set pieces.

Bodø repeatedly threatened on the counter-attack, exposing City’s inexperienced defence, which featured Abdukodir Khusanov and Alleyne at centre-back.

The defeat followed City’s weekend derby loss to Manchester United and leaves Pep Guardiola’s side facing a decisive final league-phase match against Galatasaray next week.

Erling Haaland, returning to his native Norway, was kept quiet throughout as Bodø/Glimt completed one of the most famous victories in their history.
