Real Madrid Set Up El Clásico Final in Saudi Arabia
Early Valverde strike sets the tone
Real Madrid booked their place in the Spanish Super Cup final after a tense 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid in Saudi Arabia. A stunning early goal from Federico Valverde proved decisive as Carlo Ancelotti’s side set up a mouth-watering final against Barcelona on Sunday.
Madrid struck almost immediately. Just two minutes in, Valverde unleashed a powerful free kick from long range that flew into the top corner after Jude Bellingham had been fouled. It was a dream start and gave Real instant control.
Atlético respond but fail to capitalise
Atlético Madrid reacted well after conceding and created a series of chances before the break. Thibaut Courtois was forced into action, producing strong saves to deny Alex Baena and Alexander Sorloth.
Sorloth also headed over from close range, while Conor Gallagher and Baena both went close as Atlético dominated possession and territory. Despite their pressure, they went into halftime trailing, knowing missed chances had cost them.
Rodrygo brilliance delivers second blow
Ten minutes into the second half, Real struck again. Valverde once more played a key role, threading a perfectly weighted pass into Rodrygo’s path. The Brazilian showed composure, taking a fine first touch before sliding the ball past Jan Oblak to make it 2-0.
Atlético hit back quickly. Giuliano Simeone found Sorloth at the far post, and this time the striker made no mistake, pulling one back to keep the contest alive.
Real hold firm to seal final place
The final stages were frantic. Atlético pushed hard for an equaliser, with Antoine Griezmann attempting an overhead kick and both Marcos Llorente and Julián Álvarez firing narrowly wide.
Tensions rose late on, with Vinícius Júnior and Diego Simeone both booked following a touchline exchange. However, Real’s defence held firm to see out the win.
With Barcelona already waiting after their 5-0 demolition of Athletic Club, Sunday’s final promises another explosive El Clásico showdown on Saudi soil.
