Roma Cruise Past Genoa to Move Into Serie A Top Four
AS Roma moved up to fourth place in Serie A after a dominant 3-1 victory over Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico, cutting the gap to leaders Inter Milan to just three points and restoring belief after a shaky run of form.
With three defeats in their previous four league matches, pressure was mounting on Gian Piero Gasperini’s side to respond — and they did so emphatically inside the opening 20 minutes.
Soule Sets the Tone Early
Roma needed just one shot to take control of the contest. In the 14th minute, Matias Soule showed composure beyond his years, calmly slotting past Daniele Sommariva to claim his fifth Serie A goal of the season.
Moments later, Evan Ferguson nearly doubled the lead, but Genoa’s night soon unravelled regardless.
Roma Run Riot Before the Break
On 19 minutes, chaos inside the Genoa box worked in Roma’s favour. Manu Kone found space amid a crowd, and his deflected effort crept into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
The first half became completely one-sided. More defensive errors gifted Soule another chance, and while Sommariva initially saved, Ferguson reacted quickest to bundle home the rebound and effectively kill the game before half-time.
Roma thought they had a fourth when Kone struck from close range, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper — a rare moment of respite for the visitors.
Second Half Control and Late Consolation
With the result all but settled, Roma eased off after the interval. Chances were fewer, though Sommariva still had work to do, producing an outstanding save to tip Bryan Cristante’s effort around the post.
Genoa eventually grabbed a consolation goal late on, Jeff Ekhator’s strike taking a heavy deflection on its way past the Roma keeper, but it did little to change the narrative.
Statement Win for Roma
The damage had been done in the opening 45 minutes as Roma comfortably closed out the match to end the calendar year on a high.
This result will particularly please Gasperini, given Roma’s struggles in front of goal earlier in the season — they had scored just 17 times in their previous 16 league games. Meanwhile, Genoa remain 17th, just above the relegation zone, with a crucial clash against Pisa looming in early 2026.
