Safonov the Hero as PSG Win Global Title on Penalties

A final decided by nerves

Paris Saint-Germain claimed a historic Intercontinental Cup title after beating Flamengo on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time in Doha. Goalkeeper Matvei Safonov was the undisputed hero, saving four consecutive penalties in a shootout PSG won 2-1.

The victory completed a remarkable year for the French champions, who added a sixth trophy of 2025 to an already glittering collection. PSG had already lifted the Trophée des Champions, Ligue 1, the French Cup, the Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup earlier this year.

Flashes of quality in a tight contest

The final itself was tense and evenly matched. PSG struck first in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished clinically to give the European champions the advantage. Flamengo responded after the break when Marquinhos conceded a penalty, calmly converted by Jorginho in the 62nd minute.

Both sides pushed for a winner but neither could find the decisive breakthrough, forcing extra time and eventually a penalty shootout. Flamengo, chasing a second Intercontinental Cup after their 1981 triumph, showed resilience and intensity throughout.

Safonov delivers under pressure

When the match reached penalties, Safonov took centre stage. The PSG goalkeeper saved four Flamengo spot-kicks in a row, sealing victory and sparking wild celebrations among his teammates, who lifted him into the air at full-time.

Vitinha, who converted PSG’s opening penalty, praised both teams after the match. He highlighted Flamengo’s quality and competitiveness, admitting that PSG needed total commitment to overcome the Brazilian champions.

A milestone moment for PSG

For PSG, this triumph carried extra significance. Despite their domestic dominance and European success, this was their first global title, underlining their growing stature on the world stage.

Flamengo, fresh from winning the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian league, left the pitch with pride despite the disappointment. Jorginho described the defeat as bitter but praised his teammates’ effort and determination.

PSG’s penalty triumph capped a trophy-laden year and reinforced their reputation as one of football’s most complete teams, capable of delivering even under the greatest pressure.
