The Spanish Football Association has voiced surprise and concern after learning that Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal underwent a groin procedure without their prior knowledge.

The 18-year-old was initially named in Spain’s squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey but has now been released from the national team camp after medical staff were informed of the treatment late on Monday.

Yamal underwent a radiofrequency procedure to treat discomfort in his pubic area, and doctors have recommended seven to ten days of rest, ruling him out of the upcoming matches.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said he had never experienced such a situation before and was caught off guard by the lack of communication.

Rayo Vallecano’s Jorge de Frutos has been called up to replace Yamal in the squad.

This latest episode adds another chapter to the growing tension between Barcelona and the Spanish Football Association over the management of Lamine Yamal’s fitness.

In September, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick criticised Spain for not protecting the teenager during the international break. Yamal, who had joined the national team with a minor groin issue, aggravated the injury during those matches and subsequently missed four club games.

The tension continued in October when De la Fuente included Yamal in his squad, only for Barcelona to issue a statement hours later saying the player was injured. The federation maintained that Yamal had reported no discomfort upon arrival.

Now, following the latest developments, relations between the two sides appear more strained than ever. Barcelona sources insist their medical team is in constant communication with the federation and that their sole objective is to ensure Yamal’s full recovery.
