Díaz double earns Bayern huge away win over PSG

Bayern Munich made it 16 wins from 16 this season and strengthened their position as Champions League favourites with a 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in France. Luis Díaz was the hero and villain of the night, scoring both Bayern goals before being sent off just before half-time.

Match summary

PSG started brightly with their usual high pressing and quick tempo, but it was Bayern who struck first. In just the fourth minute, Lucas Chevalier parried a Michael Olise shot, and Díaz reacted quickest to fire home the rebound.

The hosts thought they had equalised midway through the half through Ousmane Dembélé, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Bayern stayed sharp at the back and punished PSG again when Díaz robbed Marquinhos of possession and calmly slotted home his second to make it 2-0 after 32 minutes.

Just before the interval, the match took a dramatic turn. Díaz was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Achraf Hakimi, who had to be substituted with an ankle injury.

PSG push but Bayern hold firm

João Neves gave the home fans hope when he scored a brilliant scissor kick early in the second half, cutting Bayern’s lead to 2-1. PSG dominated possession from then on and pushed for an equaliser, but their finishing lacked precision.

Despite being a man down, Bayern defended with discipline and organisation, frustrating Kylian Mbappé and his teammates. PSG’s best chance came when Neves rose to meet a cross late on, but his header went narrowly over the bar.

What it means

The win keeps Bayern top of the Champions League league phase with a perfect 12 points, three ahead of PSG, who sit third. It was the French champions’ first European defeat since last season’s quarter-final exit to Aston Villa.

Reaction

“It’s always hard to lose at home. We need to assert ourselves and play better,” said PSG captain Marquinhos. “We faced a well-organised team, especially physically. We couldn’t get our game going.”

Bayern’s form underlines their early-season dominance, and they remain the only side with a 100% record in all competitions.
