Frankfurt face huge test in Naples

Goals expected as both sides seek redemption

Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt meet on Tuesday night at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, both desperate to bounce back from heavy defeats in their previous Champions League games.

With all three of Frankfurt’s group fixtures ending 5-1, and Napoli rarely playing out a dull encounter, goals seem almost guaranteed.

Napoli chasing stability under Conte

The Italian champions have endured a turbulent start in Europe. After losing to Manchester City and edging past Sporting Lisbon, Antonio Conte’s men were crushed 6-2 by PSV Eindhoven despite a brace from Scott McTominay.

Since that humiliation, Napoli have regrouped. Wins over Inter Milan and Lecce helped them reclaim first place in Serie A, while Saturday’s goalless draw with Como kept their unbeaten home record intact.

Goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic again proved decisive, saving a penalty to preserve the point. Napoli remain a force in Naples, losing just once in their last 18 Champions League home matches — to Real Madrid two years ago.

Frankfurt in trouble after defensive collapse

Frankfurt’s campaign has been chaotic. After opening with a 5-1 win over Galatasaray, they have since suffered back-to-back 5-1 defeats to Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.

In the Bundesliga, Dino Toppmöller’s side have slipped to sixth and exited the DFB-Pokal after a shootout loss to Dortmund. They have conceded 25 goals in their last eight matches, and their away form offers little comfort.

Yet, the German side still carry attacking danger. They have scored in most of their games this season, with Fares Chaibi and Jonathan Burkardt among their key threats.

Team news

Napoli’s Billy Gilmour is a doubt after picking up a muscular issue at the weekend, but Stanislav Lobotka has returned to the squad. Lorenzo Lucca is suspended after his red card against PSV, meaning Rasmus Hojlund should lead the line.

For Frankfurt, Oscar Hojlund and Can Uzun are expected to miss out, while Mario Götze could return to add creativity behind the striker.

Prediction

Napoli 2–1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Napoli’s home strength and defensive discipline should see them edge past a struggling Frankfurt side. The German visitors have the firepower to make it interesting, but the Italians’ quality in Naples should prove decisive.
