Cherki and Marmoush Secure Man City Carabao Cup Win
Omar Marmoush’s stunning late strike helped Manchester City secure a 3–1 win over Championship side Swansea, booking a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. City had to come from behind after Goncalo Franco’s brilliant early goal for the Swans threatened to spark a giant-killing upset.
Swansea Shock Early
Just 12 minutes in, Franco curled a beautiful shot into the top corner, leaving City goalkeeper Abdukodir Khusanov rooted. The Swans looked organized, disciplined, and full of belief, hoping to end Pep Guardiola’s long unbeaten streak against lower-league sides in the competition.

City Struggle to Break Through
With ten changes from Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Aston Villa, City took time to find their rhythm. Rayan Cherki hit the post following slick interplay with Rico Lewis, while a misplaced pass from Khusanov almost allowed Melker Widell to double Swansea’s lead. The hosts were resilient, and Cameron Burgess, hero of their previous round, was kept in check.
Marmoush Delivers Late
The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute. Cherki’s precise pass found Marmoush, whose powerful strike left Swansea goalkeeper Andy Fisher with no chance. The goal ended the suspense and avoided a penalty shootout. In added time, Cherki added a second for City, weaving through defenders before calmly slotting home.
Guardiola Praises Marmoush
Guardiola was full of praise for his 22-year-old forward. “He is a special talent. His vision, aggression, and personality in the final third are exceptional,” said the City boss, highlighting Marmoush’s importance despite injury struggles earlier this season.

Swansea Proud Despite Loss
Swansea manager Alan Sheehan was proud of his team’s effort. “We knew we were facing one of the best teams in the world. The players stayed together, showed confidence, and scored a fantastic first goal. I am proud of everyone at the club,” he said.
City will now face Brentford in the quarter-finals, and Marmoush’s late heroics show Guardiola’s side still have the firepower to navigate the congested cup schedule.
