Neves the Hero as Portugal Escape Late Against Brave Ireland

Portugal left it late but found a hero in Rúben Neves, whose stoppage-time header rescued a 1–0 win over a determined Republic of Ireland side in Lisbon.

From Missed Penalty to Magic Moment

Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had the chance to seal victory from the spot, but Caoimhín Kelleher had other ideas — pulling off a brilliant save with his trailing leg to deny the Portuguese captain.

It seemed like Ireland’s disciplined defending and fearless goalkeeping would earn them a valuable point. But just as the clock hit 90, Neves — wearing the late Diogo Jota’s No. 21 shirt — rose highest to nod home Francisco Trincão’s cross. The emotional winner sent the Estádio José Alvalade into wild celebration, capping a night that paid tribute to Jota, who tragically passed away earlier this year.

Heartbreak for Ireland

Heimir Hallgrímsson’s men battled bravely, showing far more resilience than in last month’s 4–0 defeat in Armenia. They defended compactly, pressed with energy, and frustrated Portugal for long stretches.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Hallgrímsson after the match. “We did everything we planned — the fight, the effort — and still ended up with nothing. It hurts.”

Ireland now face a must-win clash against Armenia in Dublin if they are to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Elsewhere in the Group

Hungary picked up their first win of the campaign with a confident 2–0 victory over Armenia. Daniel Lukacs opened the scoring in the first half before Zsombor Gruber secured the points in stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Serbia’s 1–0 defeat at home to Albania — courtesy of Rey Manaj’s neat volley — leaves Group F wide open as the race for qualification heats up.
