Calm After the Storm: United Finally Shine at Old Trafford

At last, a peaceful afternoon for Ruben Amorim. The Manchester United boss watched his side cruise to a 2–0 victory over Sunderland — and for once, the only storm he faced came from the skies above Old Trafford.

After weeks of pressure and criticism, Amorim finally got a performance that matched his vision. Goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško sealed United’s third league win and first clean sheet of the season, giving fans something to cheer about through the rain and wind.

Mount Breaks the Deadlock Early

United started with energy and intent. In just the ninth minute, a clever chip from Bryan Mbeumo found Mount in the box. The midfielder calmly took a touch and slotted home — his first Premier League goal at Old Trafford. Relief rippled around the stadium.

Amorim had made five changes after the defeat to Brentford, including a debut for young goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who had a quiet afternoon. Sunderland’s Bertrand Traoré wasted an early chance, and that was as close as the visitors came.

Mount, one of Amorim’s most trusted players, worked tirelessly — helping Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro control midfield and snuff out any danger. For the first time in weeks, United looked balanced, confident, and in control.

Šeško Doubles the Lead

The home side pushed for more, with Amad Diallo and Mbeumo linking up dangerously down the right. Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs produced a brilliant fingertip save to deny Fernandes, but United kept coming.

Eventually, persistence paid off. A long throw from Diogo Dalot caused chaos in the box, the ball flicked off a defender, and Šeško reacted fastest to make it 2–0. Two goals, two smiles — Old Trafford finally had something to enjoy.

Sunderland’s defence looked lost, and manager Régis Le Bris responded by making a defensive change before halftime — a move that spoke volumes about United’s dominance.

No Late Drama, Just Control

There was one scare before the break when referee Stuart Attwell awarded Sunderland a penalty, wrongly believing Šeško had fouled Trai Hume. VAR corrected it, and the lead stayed intact.

The second half was calm and measured — not vintage United, but professional. Amorim’s men kept possession, stayed compact, and avoided mistakes. When the final whistle blew, the sense of relief was clear.

Next up? A trip to Anfield. Amorim knows it won’t be easy, but after this performance, he can finally prepare in peace.
