Brighton Stun Chelsea with Last-Minute Double
Chelsea start strong but lose control
For 45 minutes, Chelsea looked in command. Enzo Fernández’s clever header gave them a deserved lead, and Stamford Bridge was buzzing. The Blues pressed high, passed sharply, and Brighton couldn’t get near them. It was some of their best football in weeks.
But football can change in a heartbeat. Just like in their last league game, a red card turned everything upside down.
Chalobah sees red
Early in the second half, Andrey Santos played a loose ball that allowed Diego Gomez to burst forward. Trevoh Chalobah tried to recover, tangled with him just outside the box, and at first, it looked like Chelsea might escape. The referee waved play on – but VAR stepped in. After checking the screen, Simon Hooper pulled out the red card. Suddenly Chelsea were down to ten.
The momentum shifted instantly. Brighton sensed weakness, Chelsea grew nervous, and Stamford Bridge grew quiet.

Welbeck leads the fightback
Danny Welbeck was the first to strike, rising above everyone to smash in a header with 14 minutes left. Brighton thought they had a penalty soon after when Malo Gusto’s boot caught Yankuba Minteh’s head inside the box, but both the referee and VAR ignored the shouts. The away fans were furious, but Brighton kept pushing.
Late chaos seals the upset
Deep into stoppage time, Chelsea completely unraveled. Maxim De Cuyper pounced first, firing in to complete the turnaround. Moments later, Welbeck struck again, his second goal leaving the home crowd stunned. In the blink of an eye, 1-0 Chelsea had become 3-1 Brighton.
More problems for Maresca
For Enzo Maresca, it was a nightmare déjà vu. Two league games in a row ruined by red cards, two matches where his young team couldn’t handle the pressure. Chelsea are now without a win in three Premier League matches and have managed only one win from their last five across all competitions.
Brighton, meanwhile, leave London with one of their most memorable wins in recent years – and proof they can take on anyone, anywhere.
