39 Days and Out! Postecoglou Gone in Record Time

Nottingham Forest’s latest experiment with Ange Postecoglou is over — after just 39 days in charge. The Australian coach was shown the door only 17 minutes after a 3–0 home defeat to Chelsea, ending one of the shortest managerial spells in Premier League history.

When Postecoglou arrived in September, Forest fans were promised attacking football and high energy. Instead, they got chaos — zero wins, two draws, six losses, and a team slipping dangerously close to the relegation zone.

A club statement confirmed the decision was made “after a series of disappointing results and performances.” Behind the scenes, sources say the club’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, left the stands before the final whistle — and didn’t return.

Postecoglou’s backroom team, including Nick Montgomery, Mile Jedinak, and Sergio Raimundo, are also set to leave the City Ground.

From hope to heartbreak

Forest’s free fall began immediately. A 3–0 defeat to Arsenal on opening day set the tone, followed by an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit against Swansea after throwing away a two-goal lead.

Draws with Burnley and Real Betis offered brief relief, but boos soon returned after a painful 3–2 home loss to Midtjylland. The chant of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” echoed through the stands long before Chelsea’s visit sealed his fate.

The shortest stay of them all

Postecoglou’s 39 days break the record previously held by Les Reed, who lasted 40 at Charlton in 2006. Even Frank De Boer, remembered for his four-match spell at Crystal Palace, survived longer in terms of games.

For Postecoglou, this marks a second Premier League sacking in five months — a brutal reminder of how unforgiving football can be.

Who’s next at the City Ground?

Forest’s hunt for their third manager of the season is already underway. Reports suggest Sean Dyche is high on the list, while Marco Silva remains a long-term dream target given his links to owner Marinakis.

However, with Silva under contract and costly to release, Dyche’s availability and Premier League experience make him the more realistic choice.

Whoever takes over faces a huge challenge: restoring belief, structure, and points to a team that has forgotten how to win.

And just like that — 39 days, no wins, one dream gone.
